What is VirtualBox?
VirtualBox is software that enables you to build virtual machines on your PCs. A virtual machine(VM) is another PC running on your PC. Usually, one PC has only one CPU, GPU, memory, and storage, so it’s impossible to run 2 OSs on 1 PC at the same time. However, the virtualization technology made it possible to run 2 or more OSs on 1 PC. Virtualization technology is a complicated and difficult concept, so I will not talk a lot here, but you can just think that you can build several machines on your host PC using the virtualization technology. And those PCs made by the virtualization technology are virtual machines, and VirtualBox enables you to build and customize your virtual machines.
What’s the merit of using VMs?
There are several merits of using VMs, but I think the biggest advantage of VMs is that we can save costs if we use VMs. If you want to use a Linux machine, you need to buy a new PC and install Linux on it. If you want to use a Windows machine, you need to buy it. However, if we use VirtualBox, we don’t need to buy anything because we can build those machines on our machine. VirtualBox is multiplatform and it can be used by Linux, Windows, and Mac. Furthermore, VirtualBox is free software. So, you don’t need to pay to build your new virtual machines.

Now, let’s see how to install and setup VirtualBox. I’ll use a Mac PC to explain and I won’t explain how to install it using Windows or Linux PCs. But the process is not that different depends on the OSs, so I think this article will also be helpful even if you use other OSs.
First, visit the VirtualBox download page.
Download page: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Then, click “OS X hosts” and download VirtualBox. If you use other OSs, click the associated link.
Open the “VirtualBox-xxxxxx-OSX.dmg” file you just downloaded. Then click the “VirtualBox.pkg” icon.
Then a popup window will appear, and click “Allow”.
Then, click “Continue”.
Restart your Mac PC.
Then launch the VirtualBox from the Launchpad.
If you see the VirtualBox window below, you could successfully install VirtualBox, Congratulations!
